Disney's "immersive lodging" experience, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, where guests could book two days at a Star Wars-themed hotel and experience a fully immersive theater event imitating a galactic cruise in the universe full of Jedi and Sith, has had to scale back its voyages in a galaxy far, far away as consumers are finding the cost—from $5,000 to $20,000 per night— to be not quite what they were looking for.
According to Theme Park Tourist, "it has become clear that interest has significantly waned in the last few months" in Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, which was "only ever going to be viable for the wealthiest of Disney fan," and now has scaled back it's voyages from three to two times a week, as "those who can afford it have already been which leaves Disney with a big problem."
The outlet reports that Disney said to travel agents in a news release, "When the voyage calendar is live, you may notice the schedule has been modified to provide two voyages per week, except for holiday weeks where we may have three voyages. We've been learning a lot during our first year of operation and have adjusted voyage dates to meet the needs of our guests."
The reduction will go into effect starting in October 2023 and will last at least through December, according to the booking site, for the "immersive lodging," which is located in Disney's Florida location, near it's Epcot resort.
The New York Times reports that Disney launched the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser experience in March 2022 as "an expensive experiment in what one might call immersive lodging. It is equal parts luxury hotel, interactive theater, theme park ride, food as entertainment, digital scavenger hunt and role-playing game."
According to the New York Times, Disney was quickly accused of price gouging and "taking advantage of the 'Star Wars' franchise's intense fandom" and that their new galactic cruise event was separating the "haves and have nots."
Directly after the voyages set solar sail, Disney had trouble booking all of the 100 rooms available.
In March 2022, the New York Post reported that when Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser opened many dates in June and July were available with "Almost every day in August, September, October, November and December" available as well.
Disney then started offering discounts. Disney Vacation Club members could get 30 percent off on certain 2-night bookings. In January, several dates were canceled because of low occupancy in July, August, and September and Disney offered those with tickets a 50 percent reduction for their booking of new dates.
Cast members were offered a 50 percent discount in February for a standard cabin in March through June.
The Daily Mail reports that on top of the hefty cost for tickets to Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, many extra amenities were not included in the pricetag, such as $13 beers, $23 cocktails, and $99 for a photo.
On YouTube, Disney launched a promotional video for Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser that was later deleted after criticism that it looks cheap for such an expensive ride. After seeing the ticket price, one user said "It’s way too expensive."
"The 'light saber training' looks about as exciting as a roadside sobriety test," wrote another.Powered by StructureCMS™ Comments
