Harvey Weinstein, the ex-Hollywood executive now serving a 23-year sentence for multiple instances of sexual assault, has apologized for having a packet of Milk Duds in his cell.
Weinstein was quoted by Variety as saying, "This was an innocent misunderstanding. It will not happen again. I have been a model inmate, following the rules and regulations and I am sincerely sorry."
It appears that the offending snack was found during a routine search of his cell, and these are considered contraband by corrections authorities. Weinstein claims to have not known he was in violation for the sugary snack and according to Variety, saying that he has had them since he was moved to the LA facility from New York.
The incident happened on Nov 10, 2021, after a meeting with a member of his legal team. The offending Milk Duds were immediately confiscated.
Los Angeles County Jail officials furthermore now suspect the attorney of having helped Weinstein smuggle them in, and they will, from now on, "...have to search his attorneys’ legal binders and laptop bags on future visits."
Authorities also iterated that they may require lawyers to visit Weinstein in special booths if an incident like this occurs again.
Weinstein is currently serving his sentence while his lawyers have filed an appeal. A decision is expected to come down within the next two months. However, another trial of the disgraced mogul will start soon, during which Weinstein's team will be defending him against an additional 11 charges.
