In the latest comments to the media, Jody Wilson-Raybould’s father, Bill Wilson, a hereditary chief of the Kwakwaka’wakw, said that he was “disgusted” by the way the former Justice Minister was treated by the Trudeau government.
“Her treatment, it disgusts me, nobody should be treated this way, and especially somebody who is a representative, whether she wants to be or not, of aboriginal people being treated and kicked in the face the way we always have been by his father, now by him and by the conservatives and all of the other governments,” said Bill Wilson.
Currently Wilson-Raybould is at the center of a political scandal involving allegation that the Prime Minister’s Office attempted to interfere with the justice system in favor of Montreal construction giant SNC-Lavalin.
“It’s tragic for her and I think it’s tragic for the country, I mean she upholds integrity and dignity and the rule of law and she gets kicked in the teeth and moved down to Veterans Affairs,” said Bill Wilson. “Had I been her I would have resigned, as soon as that demotion took.”
The comments come soon after the former Attorney General announced her resignation from the Liberal cabinet earlier today. Soon after her announcement, the Prime Minister told media that Wilson-Raybould should have brought her concerns about interference to him when they originally arose.
“She’s retained council to clear up what she can do, I think you’ll see her making statements and I’m pleased with that. It’s not like Jody to be muzzled in any manner,” said Bill Wilson. “She’s a very strong-willed talented individual, and I’m ashamed of what the prime minister has done to my daughter, but I’m also ashamed as these allegations prove what he’s done to this country and how we govern ourselves.”
During her announcement Wilson-Raybould said she was seeking advice from a lawyer as to what she can and cannot say. In her first statement regarding the matter, she claimed that she was bound by a client-solicitor privilege that forbid her from speaking.
Opposition leader Andrew Scheer has since asked the Prime Minister to release the former Justice Minister from the privilege so that she may clear the air for Canadians seeking to find out the truth about the SNC-Lavalin affair.
“The motion simply was you’ll go to veterans affairs, It’s lower on the totem pole so to speak, but the other thing was that you know there was a struggle to over where he would put the new rights portfolio and Jody rightfully wanted it in the Attorney General’s office, Trudeau decided to give it to Carolyn Bennett, and it’s died now, nothing’s happened since that took place,” said Wilson-Raybould’s father.
Bill Wilson was referring to his daughter’s demotion during a cabinet shuffle earlier this year where she was moved from the Justice Minister position to being the Minister of Veterans Affairs. Many sources suspect that this demotion was a punishment for her refusal to acquiesce to the PMO’s pressure to intervene in the SNC-Lavalin case.
