Joe Biden received the necessary 270 electoral votes on Monday as electors gathered across the country to cast their votes in the Electoral College.
It was California's 55 electoral votes that pushed Biden above the threshold. Biden is expected to receive 306 electoral votes, while Trump will take 232. Biden's popular vote tally puts him about 7 million votes ahead of Trump.
The US general election that took place on Nov. 3 was particularly contentious given the quick changes to voting laws and procedures across the country that were inspired by the coronavirus contagion.
Allegations of election fraud and ballot tampering were largely quieted, though for many GOP lawmakers and voters, questions remain about the validity of the election results.
Trump supporters have been hesitant to let go of the president in whom they put so much hope that their concerns would be heard against the progressive onslaught in the federal government.
As the nation turns the calendar page to 2021, the Democrats will control the White House as well as the House of Representatives. The fate of the Senate rests on a run-off election to be held in Georgia on Jan. 5. If both Democratic candidates win, the executive and legislative branches of the federal government will be in the hands of one party.
