Dr. Jordan Peterson continued his criticism of Canada's governing party after Trudeau's environment minister, Steven Guilbeault, announced plans to dismantle Canada's natural resource industry.
In an interview with left-wing outlet The Narwhal, Guilbeault said he hopes the fossil fuel industry would be phased out within two years.
"So in the next two years," said Guilbeault, "more stringent methane regulations, zero-emission vehicle standards, net-zero grid by 2035, cap on oil and gas and obviously phasing out fossil fuels. All of these things must be in place in the coming eighteen months."
"I mean, maybe 2024, but that’s the type of time frame we have to work with and it’s going to be tough because on the one hand some people are going to criticize us for not giving them enough time to be consulted, but the state of climate change is such that we need to learn to do things faster and that’s certainly true of us as a government," Guilbeault continued.
"As a minority government it would be optimistic to think we have more than two years."
Conservative Party leader Erin O'Toole criticized Guilbeault for his comments, calling him an "out of touch activist."
"When Trudeau’s Environment Minister says he wants to ban all oil and gas in two years he needs to answer how Canadians who are struggling to make ends meet are going to heat their homes," said O’Toole in a statement.
In response, Guilbeault tweeted to O'Toole: "We were given a mandate by Canadians to go further & faster on climate change, and to seize the opportunities in the green economy, ensuring all Canadians are part of the transition. As part of this plan, we’re committed to phasing out fossil fuel subsidies by 2023. Erin O’Toole and the CPC are choosing to deliberately misrepresent our plan, instead stoking fear and division. Every time the Conservatives play with the facts like this, it further destroys their credibility as a party that is serious about fighting climate change."
Dr. Peterson took Guilbeault's comments and used them as a warning to Alberta and Saskatchewan, adding that Guilbeault had "lost touch" with the Western Canada.
"You have completely lost touch with the Western provinces. You're going to destabilize the country. You're going to make people cold and poor. All to sustain your idiot moralistic utopian delusions. What in the world do you think will replace fossil fuel? Your good wishes?" he tweeted.
"Beware, citizens of Alberta and Saskatchewan. You're going to be sacrificed to the climate gods," Peterson warned.
