Justin Bieber is putting upcoming performances on hold due to a partial paralysis on the right side of his face.

"As you can probably see from my face I have this syndrome called Ramsay Hunt Syndrome," Bieber said in a TikTok Friday evening. "For those frustrated by my cancellations…I hope you guys understand. I’ll be using this time to relax and get back to 100%."

Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, also known as Geniculate Herpes Zoster, is activated by the varicella-zoster virus. According to the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, the virus is the same that causes chickenpox or shingles, but affects people differently based on a variety of genetic and health-related factors. When activated, varicella-zoster can cause pain in the ear region, swelling of facial nerves, and hearing loss. The symptoms can lead to facial drooping and a loss of muscular control, like experienced by Bieber.

In less severe cases, the condition could dissipate within weeks when treated with anti-inflammatory steroid medication. In more serious situations, the condition could be permanent.

"It will go back to normal…we don’t know how much time it’s going to be. It’s going to be ok," Bieber said.
