A two-year-old boy from Ludlow, Kentucky died on Thursday after consuming his mother's fentanyl, Fox19 reports.
The former mother, Lauren Ashley Baker, claims to have been sleeping at home at the time the overdose took place. According to her, she had used the fentanyl before going to sleep.
Baker woke up to find the fentanyl missing from her purse.
Police were called to the house mid-afternoon after the child was reported not breathing by his father, who was not at home at the time of the overdose. The boy was determined to have had respiratory arrest, and was taken to Cincinnati Children's Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Baker admitted to purchasing fentanyl in Cincinnati last week using money obtained by the recent round of stimulus checks. She shared the fentanyl with two people back in her hometown of Ludlow.
The former mother gave the police some of her fentanyl, which investigators also found on her bed. They found empty Narcan bottles at the family's home as well.
Baker, 33, has been charged with murder, drug trafficking, and importing fentanyl in connection to the incident.
