Kyle Rittenhouse was released from jail after his attorneys posted $2 million bail, setting the teenager free while he awaits trial for fatally shooting two men and wounding a third during Jacob Blake riots in Kenosha.
The 17-year-old’s bond was funded by donations sought by his lawyers. #FightBack Foundation, a free speech group, helped to raise funds for Rittenhouse's legal fees.
According to Sgt. David Wright of the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office, an attorney set up the payment and then ensured that a private security detail transported the Antioch teen on Friday afternoon.
Rittenhouse spent the last two-and-a-half months in police custody since the shootings in late August when he was chased down by a Black Lives Matter mob.
Prosecutors also charged 19-year-0ld Dominick Black—Rittenhouse's friend who allegedly supplied the Smith & Wesson M & P-15 rifle—with two felony counts of intentionally selling a gun to a minor.
Family members and representatives of the men shot have called for a higher bail for Rittenhouse, the Chicago Tribune reported.
John Huber—father of 26-year-old Anthony Huber who was shot dead—attended an online court hearing in early November to suggest a bail amount as high as $10 million, arguing that Rittenhouse is a flight risk. He called Rittenhouse’s self-defense argument “impossible” and described his son as a “hero” who attempted to apprehend the teenager.
Using blunt force that fateful night, Anthony Huber bludgeoned Rittenhouse with the sharp edge of a skateboard while reaching for the boy's rifle. Rittenhouse fired a single shot, striking the man in his chest.
Huber was designated a repeat domestic abuse offender in one criminal case. According to the Kenosha Reporter, Huber was also arrested for strangulation and suffocation, use of a dangerous weapon, false imprisonment, battery, and disorderly conduct related to a separate instance of domestic assault.
A lawyer for the surviving protester pressed for a $4 million bail. 27-year-old Gaige Grosskreutz pretended to surrender then advanced with a handgun pointed at Rittenhouse. A single shot from Rittennhouse's gun struck Grosskreutz's right bicep at close range, partially blowing his arm off.
Grosskreutz, a member of the People’s Revolution Movement, was found guilty in 2017 of wielding a firearm while intoxicated.
A friend who visited Grosskreutz in the hospital posted on Facebook: "I just talked to Gaige Grosskreutz too. [H]is only regret was not killing the kid and hesitating to pull the gun before emptying the entire mag into him. Coward."
Court Commissioner Loren Keating cited the “incredibly serious charges” and set bail firmly at $2 million at the first hearing following the Rittenhouse's extradition from Illinois to Wisconsin.
Video evidence showed Rittenhouse attempted to surrender to Kenosha authorities on the night of the shootings, but his involvement was muffled by the chaos. Rittenhouse left the scene for his well being. He appeared at the Antioch police station the next day to turn himself in. Then Rittenhouse was held without bail in the Lake County juvenile facility for two months.
The next hearing is scheduled for Dec. 3. It is unclear where Rittenhouse will reside pending trial. He previously lived with his mother, Wendy Rittenhouse, but she moved to an undisclosed location after she cited threats to her safety.
She recently appeared on Tucker Carlson's Fox News show to discuss the lawsuit that her family is filing against Democratic challenger Joe Biden's presidential campaign. The former vice president smeared her son in a campaign advertisement against white supremacy and right-wing militia.
