Left-wing activists have announced their plans to protest Senator Kyrsten Sinema while she runs the Boston Marathon. Activists recently confronted Sinema in a public bathroom at Arizona State University, demanding that she vote for Biden's Build Back Better spending plan in the US Senate. She was also confronted on an airplane.
Those activists that will be essentially bird-dogging Sinema during Monday's marathon intend to hold up signs reading "Senator Sinema: Pass the Full Deal," "Senator Sinema: Stop Running. Start Listening," and "Senator Sinema: Stop Running From Us," according to the Boston Globe.
The Green New Deal Network is the group backing the activists, and they are comprised of 15 national organizations. They released a statement to publicize their plan.
Sinema, along with her Democrat colleague Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, have been opposed to the high, $3.5 trillion price tag associated with the bill. The Democrats in the Senate need their votes in order to push the bill through.
The Arizona senator released a statement after she was harassed in the bathroom at ASU, saying that the confrontation, which was filmed by the activists, "was not a legitimate protest."
Sinema said that "It is unacceptable for activist organizations to instruct their members to jeopardize themselves by engaging in unlawful activities..." She went on to say that the environment of safety and intellectual challenges that she's worked hard to create during her 19 years teaching at ASU "was breached" by the protestors.
For others, such as feminist magazine Jezebel, the harassment was perfectly fine. In an article called "Absolutely Bully Kyrsten Sinema Outside Of Her Bathroom Stall," author Ashley Reese claimed that "They told Sinema, to her face—and through a door—that she was failing them and why."
Reese said the protestors were "Just a few constituents following their representative into a large bathroom to air their grievances," and mocked the idea that they should have contacted her through official channels, such as reaching out to her office or staff.
Of the tactics used to harass Sinema, President Joe Biden said "I don't think they're appropriate tactics but it happens to everybody. The only people it doesn't happen to are people who have Secret Service standing around with them. So, it's part of the process."
The Boston Marathon will be run on Monday for the first time in two years after being cancelled during the pandemic last fall. Sinema ran the marathon in 2014 to honor victims of a twin bombing at the 2013 marathon, and to raise money for charities founded in the names of those victims.
