Liberal MPs accused opposition parties of attempting to "dig up dirt" on the WE Charity scandal after cabinet averted a snap vote mandating more disclosure of blacked out documents provided before prorogation.

“You don’t spring a motion like this on a committee just on the fly like this and expect everyone to vote on it unless you pre-planned it, and this was pre-planned very well,” said Kingston-area MP Mark Gerretsen. “This is just an opportunity to dig up some dirt.”

According to Blacklock's Reporter, the motion was sponsored by the Conservatives, who demanded that all talent fees paid by WE to the Trudeaus be disclosed, along with "unredacted versions of all documents" involving communications between the charity and the Liberals.

“The Conservatives don’t care about anything but We Charity and I get it,” said MP Gerretsen. “I get it. You’re going after what you see as some scandal that’s going to make things incredibly bad for the government. I get it... Conservatives are so hell-bent on this,” said Gerretsen. “For once why can’t Conservatives just drop the whole charade of hating on the Prime Minister and making everything a personal attack?”

“It was all about how the Prime Minister is such a horrible human being, and ‘we need to look into this and this and that’ instead of actually doing something for Canadians,” said Gerretsen. “They think and they hope to God they can win an election by making somebody else look bad."

The prorogation of Parliament on August 18 was heavily criticized by the likes of Conservative Shadow Finance Minister Pierre Poilievre, who called out the Trudeau Liberals for shutting down committees that would investigate the WE Charity scandal.

Poilievre's condemnation included an enthusiastic press conference in which he showed the press the amount of information that was redacted in the 5,000 pages of WE Charity documents. Entire pages, completely blacked out, were tossed in the air by Poilievre, who asked: "Why don't we ask what's in those pages in a Parliamentary committee? ... Justin Trudeau shut down those Parliamentary committees. When did he do it? The same day these documents became public! What a coincidence."

Poilievre would then call the fiasco a "cover up."
