Los Angeles school board to vote on opening Planned Parenthood clinic on campus

The clinic, if approved by the seven-member school board, would be permitted to write prescriptions and dispense pharmaceuticals related to reproductive health, including contraceptives.

A public school board in Los Angeles County, California will vote on opening a Planned Parenthood clinic at a local high school on Monday evening.

The board of Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District in the south side of Los Angeles is considering allowing the reproductive health provider to open and operate a clinic at John Glenn High School, reported Fox News. Abortions and transgender-affirming hormone therapy are not listed as services that will be provided on campus in the proposal, but staff will be able to make referrals to full-service Planned Parenthood centers to students if the service they request is unavailable at the school.

The clinic, if approved by the seven-member school board, would be permitted to write prescriptions and dispense pharmaceuticals related to reproductive health, including contraceptives. This encompasses the insertion of non-surgical long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCS), including IUDs and implants, according to the proposal.

The proposal states that while the potential clinic "will encourage students to involve their families in decision making" regarding reproductive services, minors will be able to obtain those services without parental consent or notification. This is legal under California law.

If Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District approves, the contract with Planned Parenthood will last for five years before it requires renewal from the board.

"Families and taxpayers should be horrified that the Norwalk-La Mirada USD is considering a partnership with Planned Parenthood," Nicole Neily, the president and founder of Parents Defending Education, said to Fox News. "The fact that the contract specifically notes that 'under California law minors have the right to consent to reproductive health services without parental consent or notification' is appalling in and of itself – as is the list of services that will be offered to children, from STD treatment to IUDs to 'referrals to other health centers operated by Provider for services not offered at the Schools.'

"Other Planned Parenthood clinics do provide gender-affirming hormone therapy, so there is a very real possibility students will be referred off-campus to receive this treatment – again, with zero parental notification," she continued. "To add insult to injury, there is no way for parents to EVER obtain this information, as the proposed contract states that all medical records would be kept by Planned Parenthood.

In 2019, the Los Angeles chapter of Planned Parenthood announced its plan to open 50 new clinics in local high schools. The initial three-year contract reportedly cost Los Angeles County taxpayers $10 million.

LEXIT, the nation's largest Latino-oriented conservative organization, has called on their followers and supporters to join them in a protest at the school board's meeting, claiming that the district "wants to give your children the opportunity to kill their children on campus."
