A Louisiana man who is a convicted felon, has been charged with a hate crime after he allegedly threatened and intimidated his Hispanic neighbors.

According to KLFY, Phillip James Alexander is facing a slew of charges including hate crimes, aggravated assault, discharging firearms, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Over the weekend, Lafayette Police say that Alexander allegedly began hurling racist comments at his neighbors who were sitting on their front porch in the 700 block of Arthur Street.

Police Spokesperson Sgt. Robin Green told KLFY that Alexander has been accused of telling the family repeatedly "how much he hated them," that the family "should not be here," and that the family "should not be able to speak to American people," as well as other derogatory comments.

The family said that Alexander had also fired a weapon into the ground, then threatened "you better not call the police," Green added.

Green said that the family took the threats seriously, and eventually called 911.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

Alexander was located and taken into custody, being booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center. His bail has been set at $45,000, and his court date has been set for August 11.
