The Special Investigations Unit has launched an investigation after a 23-year-old man was repeatedly shot at by police during a confrontation in Vaughan.
The event happened at 12:40am on the north side of Highway 7, after police attempted to stop a vehicle for violating the Highway Traffic Act, CP24 reports. The vehicle refused to pull over and the driver eventually left the car on foot near Highway 7 and Creditstone Road.
The SIU said on Monday that “The man exited the vehicle and proceeded to walk around the exterior of a condominium and the officers followed the man.” Then, the man took part in a short exchange of gunfire with five York regional police officers.
The man fled the scene, however more gunfire exchanges later occurred, which left the man seriously injured. A witness told CP24 that they heard a total 15 gunshots. The victim was sent to hospital, after being struck in the lower body. The man is in stable condition according to police.
To allow for an investigation, police closed the westbound lanes of Highway 7 east of Jane between Creditstone and Maplecrete roads. The SIU investigates any police interaction which results in death, serious injury, or sexual assault.
Five subject officers and two witness officers have been designated as part of the investigation.
