Police have charged a man with attempted murder in northern China after he allegedly brought his paralyzed mother to an abandoned grave and buried her, according to Global News. She was found three days later—alive and covered with loose dirt.

Police were notified by the man's wife after she spotted him pushing the 79-year-old in a wheelbarrow on Saturday, May 2. She called after noticing his mother still wasn’t back three days later. Police then brought the man to detention in Jingbian county of Shaanxi province.

Rescuers noted that the woman was faintly trying to call for help when they came to free her, said police in a statement.

The man is 58-years-old and his surname has been identified as Ma—his mother’s is Wang.

His mother is partially paralyzed and the man was reportedly tired of having to look after her.

A Jingbian county prosecutor's office official said the incident is still being investigated but did not provide any further details.

Many families in China have to take care of their elders as the country's public assistance is in short supply.
