A truck driver has been charged under the Quarantine Act after telling Ontario Provincial Police they had COVID-19 in order to avoid getting a traffic ticket, CTV News reports.

The driver was pulled over while driving along Highway 401 in Napanee, a town just outside of Kingston.

According to the OPP, the vehicle was stopped due to having an unauthorized license plate. The driver only had a G1 learner's license, making it illegal for the driver to be driving along the 401 without a driving instructor present.

The OPP stated that the driver recanted his claim to having been infected with coronavirus after officers called paramedics.

Aside from being charged under the Quarantine Act for providing false or misleading statements to an officer, the driver is also being charged under the Highway Traffic Act.

Police have not offered any information about the driver such as their name or sex, aside from being 32 years old.
