A 34-year-old man has been charged months after two nooses were found hanging inside the Michael Garron Hospital construction site in the East York area of Toronto, CP24 reports.

The accused perpetrator has been identified as Jason Lahay of Toronto.

Two nooses were reportedly hung inside the under construction hospital after work on June 9, 2020. The nooses were discovered by two black construction workers the next morning.

Two more incidences of nooses being hung were reported to police later in the summer, although no charges have been laid in conjunction with them as of yet.

Nooses are sometimes used as an intimidation tactic targeting black people, evoking imagery of historic racism in the United States whereby lynch mobs would extrajudicially hang black men accused of various crimes without trial.

Despite the association with racism, Lahay was not charged with a hate crime. He was charged with three counts of criminal harassment and one count of interrupting property over $5,000.
