On Friday morning, a man out walking with two children was fatally shot in the Northeast area of Washington DC.

At around 8:30 am, the man was walking in the 2300 block of 18th Street NE, in the city's Langdon neighborhood. He was carrying an infant child in a carrier, and holding the hand of a 5-year-old child, Metropolitan Police Department Commander William Fitzgerald told reporters.

Fitzgerald said that the shooter approached the man and shot him multiple times.

"It appears he was targeted by this shooter. This individual walked up, shot him with the children right there," Executive Assistant Chief of Police Ashan Benedict told reporters, according to NBC 4.

"It’s one of the most horrible things we’ve had in the Fifth District in several years," Fitzgerald said, who added that the children are with their mother at this point.

Police on Twitter said they are looking for a 6-foot-tall black male wearing grey sweatpants, a grey sweatshirt, and a black mask.

It is currently unknown whether the deceased male was the children’s father.
