Hallandale Beach, Florida, was the site of an apparent hate crime over the weekend, when a man riding an electric bike showed up at Chabad of South Broward to deposit a cooler full of human feces outside the house of worship. He also spit on the menorah and shouted antisemitic slurs.
By the time police arrived to apprehend the suspect, he had already zipped away on his electric bike. A witness said that she saw the man when came to pick up her daughter from school, local news reports.
"After he left the bag, I followed him at least to the corner," she said. It was then that he started saying horrible things to her. "When he noticed that I was following him, he started yelling, '[Expletive] Jews. You should not be doing this,'" she said.
Sunday was also the day that the community held a pro-Israel demonstration. Organizer Joe Zevuloni said that "This racism should not exist here. It should not exist anywhere."
Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper said that "We need to live as brothers and sisters and as Americans, and as a Jewish American, I want to stop the hate."
Police are looking for the suspect, who also came to synagogue on Friday to shout antisemitic insults at people, and the Chabad intends to increase security.
