A man has been charged after being caught stealing $45,000 from a Whitby man's bank account using a fake ID, CP24 reports.

Yijie Xu, 21, used the fake ID to obtain a replacement debit card from a branch of CIBC in Brampton, which he then used to extract the money from the bank account, according to Durham Police.

Xu took out multiple deposits of $5,000 from a variety of ATM locations. He later deposited the cash into a Chinese bank account. Durham police did not yet know how he managed to craft the fake identity.

While the identity theft took place in January, it was not until March that suspicious activity was noticed by the account holder and police began investigating the crime.

Xu has been charged with "fraud over $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, identity theft, identity fraud and unauthorized possession of a credit card."

Police did not say whether the money could be recovered.
