A Manitoban construction worker died on Wednesday after the walls of the trench he was digging caved in on him. The worksite was close to Oakbank, Manitoba. He remained trapped for hours, according to Global News.

RCMP said the accident occurred on Hillside Road, in Springfield Regional Municipality. It was around 1:30 p.m. when the trench walls collapsed, burying the man beneath.

Springfield's Regional Municipality emergency crews were deployed alongside with the local fire department and a specialized Winnipeg Fire Department, who together worked tirelessly for hours to try and get the man out of the hole. They were unable to do so before he died.

The man was unearthed on Thursday morning at around 9:30 a.m. Police say he was pronounced dead on site. He was from Hanover, Manitoba and 39-years-old.

An investigation is being conducted by Oakbank RCMP and Workplace Safety and Health.
