Some people returning to Canada from abroad were denied a quarantine exemption amid confusion over the Trudeau Liberals' loosening of quarantine measures.

Incoming border traffic has increased by 25 percent after the Liberals lifted the 14-day quarantine and hotel requirements for those who are fully vaccinated with a Health Canada approved vaccine, CTV News Reports.

However, Denis Vinette, vice-president of CBSA's travellers branch, says that about half of those seeking the quarantine exemption were denied. She said in an interview that "It's a question, I think, of folks not understanding the rules."

The only people eligible for the exemption are Canadian citizens, permanent residents and eligible foreign nationals. It most of also been at least two weeks since they received their second dose of their appropriate COVID-19 vaccine.

Vinette says that most who were denied the exemption either only had one dose, or had not waited 14 days since their vaccine before trying to enter Canada.

Confusion over the rules left some Canadians forced to pay around $2,000 for a three-night stay at a government approved Hotel, followed by the mandatory two-week quarantine.
