A brewery in Massachusetts is holding an “all ages” drag show that came with the warning that it “won’t be censored for the kiddos.”
The Castle Island Brewing Company is hosting an event with drag performer Cherry Lemonade on March 19th at the Norwood Taproom. According to the brewery’s Facebook page, the event is free and open to all, but “may include adult language and themes that are not appropriate for all ages. Parental discretion is advised for anyone considering bringing the kids.”
In a screenshot shared on Twitter by Libs of TikTok, the event description says the “show is free and open to all, but won’t be censored for the kiddos.” This now appears to have been edited.
Cherry Lemonade is described as a “multi talented comedian, dancer, and singer, who always puts on a show for the CIBC crew.”
In order to access the Castle Island Brewing Company’s website, a person must confirm that they are 21 or over, and yet the company is hosting an all ages drag show that will not be censored for children.
It is events such as this that have led several Republican states to move to ban drag performances in public places. In February, Tennessee Senate Bill 3 banned “adult-oriented businesses” form operating within 1,000 feet of public parks or schools, and expanded this definition to include “male or female impersonators who provide entertainment that appeals to a prurient interest.”
Late last year, the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) sent notifications to multiple venues around the state that they would be held accountable for “exposing children to inappropriate sexualized content,” and The Plaza Live in Orlando had its liquor license revoked after it allowed children to witness a highly sexualized Christmas drag performance.
There is abundant evidence of young children witnessing explicit performances by drag queens at supposedly family friendly events. Last week, the UK cabaret company Caba Baba Rave faced intense backlash after video footage emerged on social media showing scantily clad drag queens performing highly inappropriate routines in front of an assembled crowd of parents and infants.
