Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) is calling on the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to extend its ban on evictions for American renters who are behind on their payments due to the pandemic, despite the agency not being able to find legal grounds to extend it.

Waters took to Twitter to say "I don't buy that the CDC can't extend the eviction moratorium - something it has already done in the past!"

"Who is going to stop them? Who is going to penalize them? There is no official ruling saying that they cannot extend this moratorium. C'mon CDC - have a heart! Just do it!"

This is despite a judge previosuly ruling that the CDC stepped outside its scope of its authority when it previosuly issued the moratorium on evictions, Fox News reports.

Justice Brett Kavanaugh stated in his opinion "In my view, clear and specific congressional authorization (via new legislation) would be necessary for the CDC to extend the moratorium past July 31."

In a statement, Press Secretary Jen Psaki said "to date, CDC Director Rochelle Walensky and her team have been unable to find legal authority for a new, targeted eviction moratorium. Our team is redoubling efforts to identify all available legal authorities to provide necessary protections."

Waters joins other Democrat lawmakers who are seeking to extend the moritorium. Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY) and Cori Bush (MO) have protested outside the Capitol to try to encourage leniency for renters.
