Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown is asking Ontario Premier Doug Ford to produce data that justifies new restrictions on his community's restaurants, many of which are in dire straits, the Toronto Sun reports.
Peel Region, where Brampton is located, has seen cases of COVID-19 rise, but Mayor Brown is arguing that not one single case has come from the restaurant industry in Brampton.
Brampton currently falls under modified Stage 2 restrictions until November 6, which means inside dining has been shut down, along with pubs and fitness related businesses.
Brown says the restrictions haven't helped because most cases originating in Brampton come from essential workers in the city, not the now restricted businesses.
Industries like trucking and food processing have both contributed to high case numbers in the city.
Mayor Brown said the restaurants in Brampton hold a "rigorous" adherence to "public health protocols," even the region’s medical officer of health said they are some of the safest places to be.
"What we can't afford is overzealous protocols that aren't justified by data," Brown said.
Brown, along with many municipal leaders across Ontario are worried local restaurants will go under if they’re not permitted to open with modified procedures.
