British commentator Piers Morgan abruptly left his job as host of ITV's Good Morning Britain on Tuesday after the network received over 40,000 complaints regarding his coverage of recent claims made by Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, about her treatment within the British royal family.

It has now been revealed that among the complainants was the Duchess herself, CNN reports.

The complaint filed by the Duchess allegedly was not so much about the impact of Morgan's words on herself, but more to do with her concern on how other people facing depression and other mental issues may react to his comments.

Morgan had cast doubt on the claims made by Markle that she had experienced suicidal thoughts while she was living the royal lifestyle. He also decried the Duchess for "the damage she's done" to the monarchy's reputation and prestige.

He later stormed off his own program after his fellow presenters criticized the way he had treated the Duchess.

Morgan has refused to apologize for his remarks, defending them as "free speech" and tweeting that he still did not believe her.

Markle, a Hollywood actress whose husband is sixth in line to the throne of one of the world's foremost geopolitical powers, said that she was "silenced" and mistreated while the couple lived in the United Kingdom.

Her claims sharply divided public opinion, with some expressing sympathy for the Duchess while others mocked the idea that a rich woman who is a member of a powerful monarchy is actually a victim of her circumstances.
