Members of the House of Commons heritage committee voted 11-0 to summon the heritage minister to suspend the bill until he explains it, reports Blacklock's Reporter.
The Toronto Star reported yesterday that the "request to do so was passed through a motion that also says the committee is to hear from both David Lametti, the minister of justice, and Steven Guilbeault, the minister of heritage, and a panel of expert witnesses before continuing Bill C-10’s development."
"I was happy to see the committee finally came together to find common ground. We remain committed to do everything in our power to level the playing field between creators and web giants." Liberal MP Julie Dabrusin told The Star.
Questions started to arise surrounding whether or not the bill would infringe on the Charter rights of Canadians, with the bill's open ends raising flags across party lines.
Bloc MP Martin Champoux said that Guilbeault's Liberal colleagues should “put all the necessary pressure on the Ministers to come prepared as soon as possible,”
"When we are at a point in Canadian history where we are using social media platforms as the public square, it is important to protect the voices of Canadians and how they express themselves in those spaces," said MP Rachael Harder. "The government has gone too far when it imposes itself on people and their freedom of expression, freedom of belief and freedom of opinion and starts regulating what people are saying or posting."
