Residents of the indigenous town of San Martin Peras in Oaxaca state Mexico has detained its mayor and education minister on suspicion of corruption and illegal dealings.

Roman Juarez Cruz, the mayor, and Braulio Gonzalez Ortiz, the education minister, were physically detained and placed under a type of citizen's arrest by a mob of local residents of the town, which is home to people of the Mixtec indigenous ethnicity.

According to Mexico News Daily, the pair are accused of "illicit dealings and of breaking the indigenous governing code known as usos y costumbres."

"Usos y costumbres" a regional code that has legal weight in this and other Mixtec regions of Mexico.

Mexico News Daily goes on to report that Juarez was told by the town to resign from his position on Nov 14, 2021. He, however, refused to heed their demands, and continued in office.

On Tuesday, a group of citizens took action, detaining the aforementioned two people, and also seizing several municipal vehicles, preventing their use.

Juarez was with his family at the time he was detained, but the citizens' group claims that neither he nor his family were harmed in the incident.

The group is asking that state-level authorities conduct a formal audit of the town's books.
