Conservative MP Michelle Rempel Garner held a press conference on Tuesday during which she criticized Health Canada for giving the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine to seniors despite recommendations against doing so from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization. (NACI)

"Yesterday we learned that Canada's National Advisory Committee on Immunization, or NACI, has recommended against giving the AstraZeneca vaccine to Canadians aged 65 and older, citing a lack of evidence that the vaccine is effective among this age group," Rempel said, noting that other European countries have chosen not to give the AstraZeneca vaccine to seniors.

"Late yesterday evening, we learned that in spite of this recommendation, we learned that Health Canada... has decided to ignore the advice of the experts on the immunization task force, and recommend that the AstraZeneca vaccine be given to seniors anyway.

NACI recommended on Monday that the AstraZeneca vaccine not be given to Canadians over the age of 65. While noting that there were no safety concerns with giving seniors the vaccine, they pointed to a lack of evidence showing its efficacy among older people.

Rempel demanded that the Liberal government explain why they are nevertheless recommending that seniors be immunized with the AstraZeneca vaccine, and said that they must explain what the potential impacts may be.

"This must happen now, because the AstraZeneca vaccine may arrive as early as tomorrow," Rempel argued.

Rempel warned that "this conflicting advice may lead to vaccine hesitancy among Canadian seniors," arguing that seniors may delay receiving a vaccine until they have access to the most efficient one.

Rempel, speaking on behalf of Conservative members of the parliamentary health committee, said that her party is calling for an "emergency meeting" to have health experts testify on the issue in order to determine which advice Canadians should follow.

She called for the meeting to happen "as soon as possible" and called upon other parties to support a motion for it.
