Police shot and killed a Michigan man after he stabbed a person in an area store and proceeded to use the knife to threaten a sheriff’s deputy, say Michigan State Police (MSP)

The man was reportedly refusing to wear a mask. The incident occurred in Eaton County at the Quality Dairy Store, according to The Hill.

According to the MSP’s First District, an altercation began between 43-year-old Sean Ruis and a 77-year-old man on Tuesday over face coverings.

The store refused to serve Ruis because he was not using a face mask. He then allegedly stabbed the other man and quickly got into his car and left the area.

Ruis was later spotted by a sheriff’s deputy at a traffic stop in Easton County and he then got out of his car and allegedly tried to attack the deputy who ended up uninjured.

The MSP said the deputy “attempted to increase distance by backing up and subsequently shot and injured the suspect.”

Ruis later died in a nearby hospital during surgery.

The 77-year-old who was stabbed by Ruis is alive and at a hospital in the area, say officials.

On Monday, a rule in Michigan took effect that requires residents to wear either a face mask or face covering while in public spaces. The coverings are also required in outdoor spaces where people aren’t able to social distance.

The shooting and the stabbing are both being investigated by the MSP.
