Microsoft is developing a technology whereby Bitcoin can be mined using human brain activity, The Independent reports.

The technology, patented as "Cryptocurrency System Using Body Activity Data," explains how humans can have a series of sensors linked to their body in order to track brain function, allowing the human brain to effectively mine Bitcoin by performing certain tasks.

The patent serves as an alternative to traditional Bitcoin mining operations, whereby massive levels of computer processing power are used to solve mathematical problems, allowing Bitcoin to be mined in the process.

Instead, biometric sensors would monitor "human body activity associated with a task," mining for Bitcoin in the process. The sensors would be linked up to specific parts of the human body to monitor this brain activity.

"For example, a brain wave or body heat emitted from the user when the user performs the task provided by an information service provider, such as viewing an advertisement or using certain internet services, can be used in the mining process," the patent explains.

"Instead of massive computation work required by some conventional cryptocurrency systems, data generated based on the body activity of the user can be proof-of-work, and therefore, a user can solve the computationally difficult problem unconsciously."
