The Minneapolis City Council voted unanimously on Friday to create a Traffic Safety Division, a traffic enforcement unit which would be separate from the city's police and would be unarmed.

According to city council documents, the move is meant to increase traffic safety, eliminate racial disparities in traffic enforcement, educate the public on vehicular safety, and build trust with the community, Fox News reports.

The vote comes one week after the killing of Daunte Wright in the Minneapolis suburb of Brooklyn Center.

Wright was pulled over by police for having an expired vehicle registration tag, and police attempted to arrest the man after it was discovered that he was facing weapons violations charges. When Wright resisted arrest, a police officer apparently attempted to subdue Wright with her taser but shot him with her gun instead. Wright died shortly afterwards.

While the incident has been characterized as an accident, some have questioned how an experienced police officer could make such a drastic error.

The city council also voted 11-1 to end the use of tear gas as a form of crowd control during protests.
