A Texas blogger was paid by Democratic Rep. Vicente Gonzalez's campaign to attack Republican opponent Rep. Mayra Flores as a "cotton-pickin' liar" who they call "Miss Frijoles." The discovery has prompted denunciations by fellow Democrats.
Posts using the "Miss Frijoles" slur first appeared just three days after Gonzalez paid out a $1,200 check to The McHale Report blog on June 24 for "advertising services," the Democrat's Federal Election Commission finance report shows. The blog has called Flores "Miss Frijoles" 21 times since that check was paid. Campaign advertising did not appear on the site.
Flores said in a Twitter post that Gonzalez "hired a local blogger to run hateful and racist ads" against her.
"I love frijoles & I grew up eating frijoles. I am not embarrassed of my upbringings & frijoles w/tortillas de harina is simply the best. Here's to Miss Frijoles 2022," she wrote in the post.
The Gonzalez campaign and blogger Jerry McHale deny the accusations, telling NBC News that the timing of the attacks were coincidental, and that Gonzalez did not pay for the posts or know about them. The blog, however, has not run a single ad for Gonzalez.
"Of course, the congressman is against referring to Rep. Flores as 'Miss Frijoles' or a 'cotton-picking liar'," Gonzalez’s campaign manager, Collin Steele, wrote in a text message to NBC News.
McHale said that he is a liberal Democrat who is attempting to be "merciless with her," saying that "it's a war against the Republican."
One post reads: Maclovio O'Malley, after his Bob Dylan set at El Hueso de Fraile, threw back a tequila and unleashed this tirade:
"Who does this Mayra Flores think she is? Somebody said she was crowned Miss Frijoles 2022 in San Benito. She isn't in Congressman Vicente Gonzalez's league. She isn't even in the bush leagues unless she doesn't shave her p*ssy. We'll leave Trump to look into that matter since by her subservience to Trump she communicates that she doesn't have any problems with the ex-President grabbing women by the genitals. Trump is such a malevolent influence that I wouldn't be surprised if Republican County Judge candidate Carlos Cascos starts grabbing women by their private parts."
McHale has a history of using racist terms against Hispanics and African Americans, according to Fox News. He told Fox News that there was appropriate times to use the N-word, and added that he would "not have used it gratuitously... There would have been a reason."
In a statement to Fox News Digital, Flores responded to the posts, calling them "truly sick."
"I am disgusted that Vincent Gonzalez has hired a creepy blogger to attack my Mexican heritage and sexually degrade me, but I won’t let this distract me from my work," she said.
"I came to Congress to represent my community’s values: God, Family and Country. Vincent Gonzalez is an example of everything that’s wrong with Washington. He doesn’t have a record to stand on, so he hires a pervert to attack me. It’s truly sick!" Flores told Fox.
