Several monkeys escaped from a laboratory in India on Tuesday, and to make matters worse, they were carrying samples of COVID-19-tainted blood with them, according to Global News.
The Times of India reported that during their escape, the monkeys attacked a lab technician.
The laboratory was part of a Meerut medical college located in the Uttar Pradesh region of northern India.
"Monkeys grabbed and fled with the blood samples of four COVID-19 patients who are undergoing treatment," said Dr. S. K. Garg, an official of the medical college.
Garg added that "No evidence has been found that monkeys can contract the infection." He hopes that will help people stay calm as fears mount in the surrounding area that the monkeys might spread COVID-19 around Meerut.
Garg couldn't confirm that the test tubes hadn't been spilled or opened however.
India currently has more than 165,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and approximately 4,700 deaths.
Twitter is ablaze with users comparing the incident to movies like 28 Days Later and of course Planet of the Apes.
It seems like something straight off of the silver screen and in a year like 2020, people need only to turn to the news for entertainment as fact has truly become stranger than fiction.
