The reopening of schools is being delayed until September in the greater Montreal area, according to CBC News.

During a Montreal news conference on Thursday, Premier François Legault noted that the area has not seen a large enough drop in coronavirus deaths or hospitalizations for schools and daycares to begin reopening.

He said children may not be able to go back to school until September and special needs students might be returning even later.

Daycares are set to open on June 1, though Legault noted that this could only happen if public health conditions are good enough.

Legault said that some Montreal area retail stores can still reopen if more people begin wearing masks.

Earlier in the week he said the face-coverings will not be enforced by the government because not all people have access to them. He added that they strongly recommend wearing the masks in enclosed public spaces.

The greater Montreal area has a population of 4.2 million and includes 82 municipalities.
