A group of night shift workers in Montreal were handed fines by police for violating pandemic-related curfews despite having the necessary authorization letters from their employer, CTV News reports.

Employees of Marché Good Food had just completed their night shift at 8:00 pm and were reportedly waiting at the bus stop. As they were waiting, they were ticketed by police for breaking the curfew, which began at 8:00 pm.

Marché Good Food confirmed that three of their employees received tickets from police "even though they presented their essential worker letter."

"We have reached out to the employees and are gathering further information to better understand what happened and what next steps will be," said Marché Good Food investment relations director Roslane Aouameur.

Quebec instituted a curfew last week in an attempt to curb the spread of coronavirus in the province. The curfew has been criticized as being overly authoritarian and restrictive, banning people from doing basic things such as nighttime walks.

Montreal police did not comment on the case.
