A new poll has found that the majority of Canadians still think that the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic is in the past, as fears of a Delta variant driven fourth wave grow.

The new poll by Leger shows that 54 percent of Canadians believe that the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic is behind them, however that is a 9 percent drop from last month when 63 percent of Canadians believed that.

CP24, spoke with Leger executive vice-president Christian Bourque about the drop in optimism, to which he said, "We are seeing an impact of all the talk around the Delta variant. It is scaring some Canadians."

According to this poll, 73 percent of Canadians do not want to see all COVID-19 restrictions lifted at this time. That figure is up three points from last month.

The sentiment against lifting all restrictions is shared by Canada's top doctor Theresa Tam, who said last Friday,  "The trajectory will depend on an ongoing increase in fully vaccinated coverage and the timing, pace and extent of reopening."

The poll was conducted online, and saw 1,534 Canadian adults provide answers to the questions asked between July 30 and August 1. A margin of error cannot be assigned as internet-based polls are not considered to be random samples.
