Independent MPP Randy Hillier sparked outrage after he posted a picture on social media of his Christmas dinner with family. The gathering had 15 people, which defies the regulations set on indoor gatherings by the Ford government.
The Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston MPP posted the picture on social media on December 27, along with the phrase "merry Christmas. Peace & goodwill to all."
Hillier has since doubled down, tweeting: "The lies and deceptions of covid are over. How & why so many allowed themselves to be deceived will take years to to uncover, but I and many other Canadians will not accept the deception any longer. We are free and will defend our freedom"
Hillier, who was once a member of Doug Ford's PC Caucus, is a strong opponent of COVID-19 restrictions. He has previously cited his opposition to masks and lockdowns, and has been the organizer of anti lockdown protests at Queen's Park.
The reactions on social media have been mixed. Many applauded Hillier for his defiance, while others bashed him, calling him ignorant and saying that he is putting lives at risk.
Hillier, who already faces charges for organizing an anti-lockdown protest, could also face charges for having his family over for Christmas, as it violated the lockdown order, though none have been announced as of yet.
