MTG moves to impeach Jan 6 prosecutor over 'weaponization' of DOJ

"The time for weaponizing the Department of Justice needs to come to an end."

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) revealed that she will be putting up articles of impeachment against US Attorney for Washignton, DC Matthew Graves, who has worked as a lead prosecutor for cases stemming from the Capitol riot of January 6, 2021.

"The time for weaponizing the Department of Justice needs to come to an end," Greene declared, adding that Graves will not pursue justice for "real criminals that are violating all the crimes here in Washington, DC." Most of the 1,000 plus defendants set to stand trial after arrests for Janaury 6 related charges are accused of misdemeanor offenses.

Greene accused Graves of "maliciously prosecuting" more than 1,000 people who protested on Jan. 6, adding that he recently proclaimed he will ensure that "at least one thousand more" end up being charged.

Graves, Greene said, refused to press charges on 67 percent of those arrested under his jurisdiction in 2022, instead electing to hone in on prosecuting Jan. 6 defendants, according to Greene.

She also spoke about Matthew Perna, a man who she says entered the Capitol through an open door and harmed nobody. After being contacted by the FBI, Perna eventually plead guilty to all charges.

Then, Greene claims that just before Perna was set to receive his sentence, Graves specifically requested the judge give him more time in order to land Perna in prison for a few more years.

"And this is what you’ve done repeatedly, over and over, for those who pled or were convicted on Jan. 6," she said.

Perna later took his own life at the young age of 37 years old.

"On March 29, 2022, you dropped the case against Matthew Perna because he was dead," stated Greene.

Graves has reportedly defended the work of his office, claiming that it is pursuing most violent felonies, with more minor cases not being charged.

This attack on Graves comes months after Greene put forth articles of impeachment against Attorney General Merrick Garland over the FBI raid of former President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate for alleged improper possession of classified documents.

Greene has been a longtime advocate of those locked up following the Jan. 6 protests. She notably was the first-ever member of Congress to testify under oath about what took place on that fateful day, doing so in April of last year.
