Baroness Claire Fox of Buckley, a non-affiliated life peer of the House of Lords, spoke about the Canadian Prime Minister's "shocking" use of the Emergencies Act to freeze the bank accounts of protesters.
She described how PayPal's financial censorship "reminded me of when the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau froze the freedom convoy protesters' bank accounts last February."
"That was shocking," she declared, "but at least it was clearly a political act."
"The problem when payment process organizations defund based on content is they're often invasive and opaque about who is targeted and why," she told the House of Lords.
"Pay Pal gave contradictory and vague explanations last September, initially citing its acceptable use policy associated with criminality and hate speech, then later telling The Times that the accounts were guilty of misinformation about vaccines," she added.
PayPal banned free-speech crusader Toby Young, as well as his two news sites, the Daily Sceptic, and the Free Speech Union, on September 15, 2022, for allegedly spreading "misinformation."
However, the company eventually backtracked following immense backlash from civilians and politicians.
Young said at the time that PayPal originally claimed that he had promoted "hate, violence or racial intolerance," but then proceeded to flip flop, claiming afterward that he was "spreading COVID-19 misinformation."
"It's hard to avoid interpreting PayPal's action as anything other than an orchestrated, politically motivated move to restrict certain views in the UK," Baroness Fox said.
Trudeau came under immense criticism for his treatment of the Freedom Convoy protesters, which included freezing the bank acounts of people involved, as well as repeatedly calling them "racists" and "misogynists."
