Update: On July 4, Pelosi and Schumer announced in a joint statement that Woody Williams would indeed lie in honor:
“Woody Williams embodied the best of America: living a life of duty, honor and courage,” Pelosi said.
“Woody Williams was an American hero who embodied the best of our country and the greatest generation,” Schumer added.
Original story follows:
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi continues to ignore a resolution sent to her by West Virginia representative Carol Miller that would allow the last surviving World War II Medal of Honor recipient to lie in honor at the US Capitol.
The veteran in question, Woody Williams, passed away on Wednesday at the age of ninety-eight, serving in the Pacific Theater of World War II, and most notably fighting in the battle of Iwo Jima.
Following his death, Miller urged Pelosi to pass the aforementioned resolution, which was introduced and referred to the House Committee on House Administration in January 2021, but has since sat dormant.
After receiving no response from Pelosi, Miller tried yet again on Thursday, sending a letter to the House Speaker.
"I write to you with a heavy heart," she began, informing Pelosi of Williams' death.
"As a tribute to the 'Greatest Generation' and to honor the life [of] Woody, I ask you to bring H.Con.Res 7 to the floor immediately to allow Woody to lie in honor at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda."
"I urge you to act quickly," she added. "Bestowing this honor to Woody would not only recognize his accomplishments, but would also serve as an important tribute to all of the Medal of Honor recipients and veterans from World War II."
Miller pointed out that Williams was much more than a soldier, calling him an "American hero."
"He devoted his life to veterans and Gold Star Families," she wrote. "He and his Foundation have established 103 Gold Star Families Memorial Monuments across the United States, with more than 72 additional monuments under way. He played a critical role in helping veterans throughout his community and will be sorely missed."
House Judiciary Committee Republicans blasted Pelosi's inaction on the resolution, saying that the fact she's ignoring it tells "all you need to know about the Speaker."
