The Navy has released the names of five missing US sailors who were presumed dead after a helicopter crashed off the San Diego coast in southern California.
The five have been officially declared deceased Saturday by the Navy, adding to the running total in recent history of US servicemen killed in the line of duty.
The 72-hour search mission has been changed to a recovery mission after 34 separate search and rescue flights and over 170 hours of flight time looking for the missing sailors. A sixth sailor was rescued shortly after the crash on Tuesday.
According to Fox News, the names of the five sailors are:
- Lt. Bradley A. Foster, 29, a pilot from Oakhurst, California
- Lt. Paul R. Fridley, 28, a pilot from Annandale, Virginia
- Naval Air Crewman (Helicopter) 2nd Class James P. Buriak, 31, from Salem, Virginia
- Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Sarah F. Burns, 31, from Severna Park, Maryland
- Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Bailey J. Tucker, 21, from St. Louis, Missouri
The Navy MH-60S helicopter was about 60 knots off of the California coast "conducting routine flight operations" from USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) when the aircraft suddenly crashed into the sea at around 4:30 pm on Tuesday. The cause of the crash has yet to be confirmed, but an investigation is underway.
