New Democrat leader Jagmeet Singh said on Wednesday that he disavowed of his brother-in-law's donation of $13,000 to the freedom convoy.

Singh said that he disavowed the convoy altogether due to their "extremist and dangerous views."

"[I] ... disagree with him about this donation and told him so. I am against this convoy and against the dangerous and divisive rhetoric we're seeing coming from it," Singh said, according to CBC.

"I understand people are frustrated that we're still in this pandemic two years later. The best way to get out of this pandemic, and to keep ourselves, our families and our communities safe, is to get vaccinated and to listen to public health experts."

Singh said that the funds are in the process of being returned to his brother-in-law, Jodhveer Singh Dhaliwal, who "misunderstood" what the funds were going towards.

An NDP source told the CBC said "There was a misunderstanding. Once he understood the true nature of this organization, a process was started to return the donation."

The convoy has been heavily disavowed by the New Democrats and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who called the group "fringe."

"The small fringe minority of people who are on their way to Ottawa, or who are holding unacceptable views that they're expressing, do not represent the views of Canadians who have been there for each other," he said.
