On Wednesday, the FBI announced that a suspect of domestic terrorism was killed during a confrontation as they tried to apprehend him close to Kansas City, Missouri. The man was allegedly planning to set off a car bomb at a medical facility in the area.
The FBI said that 36-year-old Timothy Wilson was “actively planning to commit an act of domestic terrorist bombing, and over the course of several months had considered several targets.”
Wilson recently made the hospital his target after news of the novel coronavirus began to spread according to ABC News.
He was killed on Tuesday after allegedly arriving armed to purchase an inert explosive device that authorities were supplying. He was injured during the incident and later pronounced dead at the local hospital.
It is not yet known whether the suspect endured self-inflicted wounds or was shot by authorities.
The FBI noted that Wilson was planning to attack the hospital at an earlier date “in an attempt to cause severe harm and mass casualties” amid the coronavirus pandemic.
“Wilson considered various targets and ultimately settled on an area hospital in an attempt to harm many people, targeting a facility that is providing critical medical care in today's environment,” said an FBI Kansas City Field Office statement.
“Wilson had taken the necessary steps to acquire materials needed to build an explosive device. At all times during the investigation, the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force kept close track of Wilson in order to protect public safety.”
The Anti-defamation League’s Center on Extremism noted that Wilson’s Telegram account revealed that he was connected with the neo-Nazi organizations “National Socialist Movement and Vorherrschaft Division.”
He displayed antisemitism in a post on Twitter blaming Jewish people for the COVID-19 outbreak.
He said, “If you don’t think this whole [coronavirus] thing was engineered by Jews as a power grab here is more proof of their plans. Jews have been playing the long game we are the only ones standing in their way.”
The suspect was previously targeting a school and has been under FBI investigation for close to 18 months.
