EcoHealth Alliance, a non-profit organization which funds the Wuhan Institute of Virology, received over $700,000 in grants from the US government in 2021, Daily Caller reports.

The organization received $719,570 from the US government in February, a little less than the $738,861 the group received last year. The organization has previously been accused of illegally failing to disclose taxpayer funding.

The funding comes as part of a coronavirus pandemic bailout package passed by both the Trump and Biden administrations.

Peter Daszak, the head of EcoHealth Alliance, was the only American member of the WHO team which investigated the origins of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic in China. He has previously been involved in "dangerous" research regarding bat coronaviruses.

Some have speculated that the COVID-19 pandemic may have originated from the lab in Wuhan, noting that Wuhan was the origin of the coronavirus outbreak. The Wuhan Institute of Virology is a biosafety level 4 lab, which is a designation used for laboratories containing viruses which are extremely dangerous and lethal among humans.

Many scientists and organizations have dismissed the lab-leak hypothesis, noting the lack of evidence of genetic manipulation observed in SARS-CoV-2. While the WHO has described such an origin as "extremely unlikely," the international body has not yet ruled out the possibility that it leaked from a lab.
