Toronto Police Service say a now-retired detective stole opioids from their evidence lockers.
Police say the homicide detective, identified as Paul Worden, admitted to taking the drugs to treat a prescription painkiller addiction.
Police spokeswoman Meaghan Gray says charges are not being considered against Worden, drawing comparison to not charging individuals calling for drug overdoses.
The situation will be reviewed by the Ontario Provincial Police.
Worden has since been receiving help from professional drug councilors.
