"We support asylum seekers but not on school grounds," a large group of students chanted while holding signs outside PS 188 elementary school in Coney Island, video posted to Twitter shows.
"Schools are not shelters," Natalya Murakhver, co-founder of Restore Childhood, told The Post Millennial. She confirmed that 20 schools have now been forced to accept illegal immigrants to be housed in their schools. Murakhver said that some schools are forcing kids to have recess in the streets.
"As if the pandemic school shut downs that cause massive mental health issues, obesity and learning loss amongst our city's children weren't egregious enough, now our city takes away their gyms, were many children spend their favorite period the day. It is astonishing that after parents have been kept out of school buildings for close to 3 years, our city places undocumented unvetted asylum seekers in close proximity to elementary school children without any concern for safety or well-being," Murakhver said.
According to the video, parents stood alongside their children and voiced concerns about the illegal immigrants being housed at the school, saying that they're "afraid." Parents told press that that they made the decision to pull their kids out of school and called on the city to remove the illegal immigrants from school grounds.
"There's a lot of parents talking about how afraid they are, some have pulled their kids out of school," journalist Gwynne Hogan wrote.
While concerned parents protested outside of the school with their kids, a few members of the local Community Education Council arrived to counter-protest in favor of the migrants but "got heckled" by the crowd, according to Hogan.
New York City converted the low-income elementary school's gymnasium into a temporary shelter for illegal immigrants on Thursday and while the city decided to reverse course following public outcry by concerned Brooklyn parents on Friday, video captured by local journalists showed migrants arriving at the school on buses and entering the gymnasium on Monday.
Mayor Adams did not inform parents until after the city installed 64 cots in the school's gymnasium meant to house up to 100 illegal immigrants because the Adam's administration "knew the community would be against it," Republican City Councilman Ari Kagan said.
The school board was also not informed of the city's decision and issued a letter on Friday saying that the city did not give them any "advance notice of this action" and that the board "has been struggling all day to get the most basic information from various agencies regarding how many people will be housed there, for what length of time, whether the individuals have been screened for communicable diseases, what measures are in place to provide services, etc."
Democrat Mayor Adams declared a state of emergency in the city of New York in October over Biden's illegal immigration crisis, and requested $1 billion in aid from the federal government to help with assistance. Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott has been shipping illegal immigrants to Adams' sanctuary city to send a statement to both the Biden administration and Democratic lawmakers.
On Wednesday, Mayor Adams signed an executive order that suspends New York City’s "right to shelter" law and asked a judge to remove the city's status as a "sanctuary city." The right to shelter law was put in palce so homeless New Yorkers could always access a bed, but the city is unable to provide shelter for the masses of illegal immigrants flooding daily into the city.
Mayor Adams has been packing illegal immigrants residing in NYC onto buses and shipping them to Orange County and Rockland County in Upstate New York, specifically the city of Newburgh which had hotels evict homeless veterans earlier this week to make room for illegal immigrants.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency on Monday and requested both federal aid and intervention, stating "New York is bursting at the seams."
On Tuesday, Mayor Adams called on the city to revoke its "sanctuary status."
