Unvaccinated teachers in New York City have until the end of the work week to get their mandated Covid jab, per the latest decision from the courts arguing over the matter. If they don't, they could be fired. A hearing had been scheduled for Wednesday.
On Monday, it was decided by federal judges that New York City employees in the public education system must be vaccinated by Friday at 5 pm. This is the latest ruling from the US Circuit Court of Appeals, which decided to lift the previous injunction block on the order, according to ABC.
It was on August 23 that New York City Mayor de Blasio first announced his Covid vaccine mandate for everyone working for the NYC Department of Education. September 27 was the initial set deadline for everyone who works for that agency, from teachers to staff, to be vaccinated with at least one dose.
Reports say that despite the backlash, 87 percent of all Department of Education employees are now vaccinated, with 90 percent of that total being teachers. In addition to the law suit, there have been protests opposing the mandates.
Lawyers Mark Fonte and Louis Gelormino are petitioning the Supreme Court on behalf of their unvaccinated clients.
Per Mr. Fonte: "With thousands of teachers not vaccinated the City may regret what it wished for. Our children will be left with no teachers and no security in schools."
The NYC Department of Education responded to that with "Vaccinations are our strongest tool in the fight against COVID-19 – this ruling is on the right side of the law and will protect our students and staff."
The hearing that was scheduled for Wednesday has seemingly been cancelled out by the Monday decision.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul is ready and willing to replace employees fired over failure to comply with vaccine mandates. This as Hochul recently unveiled plans to use the National Guard to fill in the blanks left by unvaccinated health care employees fired for not meeting her deadline for vaccination.
