The career criminal who killed one NYPD officer and critically injured another has died of his injuries on Monday after he was shot by a third officer at an Harlem apartment complex last Friday.
According to the New York Post, 47-year-old Lashawn McNeil was shot in the head and arm by police after ambushing two other NYPD officers. The suspect’s mother cited her son’s history of mental illness when speaking to the outlet.
"I hope he burns in hell," a cop told the paper. McNeil’s track record includes a 2003 drug conviction, a 2002 arrest for assaulting a cop, and a 1998 gun possession arrest, among others. It’s said that McNeil was out on probation at the time of his attack on police.
"This is what police officers are up against," Mayor Eric Adams told the media while holding up a picture of one of McNeil’s guns.
"It is our city against the killers. It is our city against the killers. This was just not an attack on three brave officers, this was an attack on the city of New York, it is an attack on the children and families of this city," Adams said in reaction to the incident.
McNeil used a modified Glock .45 handgun in his attack on NYPD officers, but authorities found an additional assault rifle under his mattress.
It was first reported back on Friday that 22-year-old officer Rivera was shot to death, and 27-year-old Wilbert Mora was critically injured after answering a domestic disturbance call at a Harlem apartment. McNeil’s mother expressed her regrets about making the initial 911 phone call in the first place.
Officer Mora is still in critical condition as of Monday night.
