Former President Barack Obama used the deadly mass shooting at a Colorado supermarket on Tuesday to call for stricter gun control legislation, Axios reports.
"A once-in-a-century pandemic cannot be the only thing that slows mass shootings in this country," Obama said. "We shouldn’t have to choose between one type of tragedy and another."
"It will take time to root out the disaffection, racism and misogyny that fuels so many of these senseless acts of violence. But we can make it harder for those with hate in their hearts to buy weapons of war," he continued.
The shooting cost the lives of ten people and is the second killing spree to rock the United States in the past week. It follows a series of three shootings at various massage parlors in Atlanta, Georgia, in which eight people were murdered.
President Joe Biden, who served as Vice President under Obama, has also taken the opportunity to promote gun control in the wake of the mass shooting.
"We can ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines in this country, once again... It will save lives, American lives. And we have to act," Biden said.
