On the 76th anniversary of the Allied invasion of Normandy in World War II, Black Lives Matter protesters in London defaced a statue of Winston Churchill, the British Prime Minister who defeated Hitler. They also defaced a monument that honours Abraham Lincoln, who abolished slavery in the United States of America.
Lincoln's defacement is entirely perplexing, as his legacy is one of freedom for all Americans, not enslavement.
Churchill and Lincoln have both faced their fair share of controversy as revisionist historians look back upon the past through a 21st Century lens, and attempt to hold long dead leaders to account for their supposed failings.
Despite the attempts to rewrite the historical narrative and portray Churchill in a negative light, it must be said that Churchill was nothing short of heroic. As the Prime Minister, Churchill went against calls to capitulate to Nazi Germany and took the fight all the way to Hitler's doorstep.
While London was bombed, Churchill organized with the Allied nations of Canada and the US to defeat the Axis powers that sought to conquer Europe. In Asia, British forces mounted a brave, if costly defense of countries invaded by Imperial Japan.
Hitler and his army were responsible for the murders of 6 million Jewish Europeans, as well as the murders of countless others both through intentional genocidal practices and military conquest and barbarism.
Lincoln, whose monument was not spared by vandals, was the American president who emancipated black people from enslavement in the United States. His Emancipation Proclamation released human beings from bondage and began the long, arduous road for the nation to recover from slavery—a road the US is still plodding diligently along.
Those protesters who defaced the monuments to Churchill and Lincoln are the product of an educational system that seeks not to enlighten and engage the critical faculties but to indoctrinate students into woke causes without giving them any understanding of the heavily grooved, well-worn path that brought us to this place.
Yet in the streets of London, New York, Toronto, and so many others, protestors are attacking every single aspect of Western civilization, including those who helped liberate the west from the twin scourges of tyranny, fascism and human bondage.
What the protesters really want appears to be the destruction of everything that keeps us civilized. They want mob rule, and desecrating monuments to the past is a testament to their hatred of everything that makes us... us.
Protest is not only necessary for a healthy democracy to flourish, it is a right. But politicians who back the demands to burn it all down are advocating for the systematic destruction of society as a whole. They believe that our society is not worth saving.
These are the same officials that are bowing and kneeling in the streets and telling police authorities to stand down, and then watching as the memory of those who stood firm to those guiding principles of freedom, liberty, and a refusal to capitulate to tyranny are vandalized.
Instead of erasing the legacy of men like Churchill and Lincoln, we should be driving forward with their mission. But we can't do that if instead of upholding it, we seek to tear it down.
